Pupil grouping

It is often beneficial to group the able scientists together for the practical part of the lesson. This is particularly the case for scientific investigations so that the able pupils can work at their own pace and level of complexity. This may then mean that they will need less support in terms of the planning and carrying out of the investigation or, alternatively, more support if conducting a more complex investigation than the rest of the class.

Teacher questioning

It is, however, quite possible for pupils to become caught up in the doing of the investigation rather than in the thinking associated with it. As has been discussed in the previous chapter, the teacher’s use of thought-provoking and probing questions is vital to maintaining a high level of challenge. O’Brien (1998) encourages teachers to question children, for example, about the purpose of their practical work and the spotting of relationships in their results. Hence investigations become enquiry orientated, as the concentration is on the analysis of data, evaluation of properties and/or synthesis of ideas, i.e. areas that require higher order thinking.
